# ON THE TOOTH-FISHES
Many fish are named for either the abundance or some distinctive quality of their teeth. For instance, a certain species of tuna is called *synodontis* by the Greeks because of the strength of its teeth; likewise, the fish they call *synidon* or *synidos* is known as the *Dentex* to the Latins. It is worth noting, however, that because of these unique dental features, authors frequently confuse several fish—specifically the Dentex, the Synagris, and the Aurata. For this reason, we provide here an illustration of the jaws of the *Synodontis*, showing the teeth in its palate, followed by an old, toothed *Aurata*, a name authors sometimes substitute for the *Synagris* or *Synodontis*.
