Pliny testifies in several passages that in the eastern mountains of India, there is a region called Cartaduli where Satyrs live. These are horned, hairy, and incredibly swift beings with a human countenance but the feet of a goat. They have no human social graces and prefer the seclusion of the woods; due to their speed, they can only be caught if they are sick or old. Pomponius Mela adds that these creatures are semi-feral, possessing nothing human except their appearance. He also recorded that beyond the Atlas Mountains in Mauritania, lights are frequently seen at night and the sound of clashing cymbals and piping flutes is heard, yet by day, no one can be found.
