304 Ulisse Aldrovandi
dedicated marble images. For example, a statue of Faunus in the house of Cardinal Borghese, one of the goddess Flora in the Farnese palace, and a Ganymede in the gardens of the Grand Duke of Tuscany are viewed by everyone. Indeed, there are many statues of Hercules; the Romans take pride in a bronze likeness of Hercules, crafted by the hand of an exceptional artist, located on the Capitol. Furthermore, they can see a marble Hercules with the apples of the Hesperides in the gardens of Cardinal Carpi; another statue of him in the gardens of the Cardinal of Ferrara (where there is also another unidentified statue); Hercules wrestling with the lion in the gardens of the Grand Duke of Tuscany; a marble Hercules in the Garimberti Museum; another in the villa of Pope Julius III; one in the New Farnese Palace; and finally, a young Hercules, still a boy with snakes, in the house of the Albertoni.
To these we may add the most elegant statue of Laocoön in the papal gardens, and an image of Leda in the Villa Borghese. There is also a statue of Mnemosyne and Minerva on the Capitol, where a stone Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus is also visible. Many statues of the Nile were fashioned by the ancients, one of which is placed in the Vatican garden and another in the gardens of Cardinal Cesi. A statue of Nature (or the Earth) is in the Garimberti Museum, and a certain statue of a nymph is in the Carpi garden. Statues of a Shepherd and Psyche adorn the villa of Pope Julius III, just as a stone Pomona graces the Villa Borghese. A captive King of the Parthians decorates the Farnese palace, and another captive Parthian King, fashioned from black stone, adorns the Cesi house.
