...many images had been left out and were by no means included in the published histories. Marveling at this, I decided to act—both to ensure these works would not be buried in perpetual darkness, and to show my devotion to you, who are so gracious to those who serve you. As Virgil once wrote:
"A kindness remains well-placed in the hearts of those who remember."
From these collected images, I have compiled these *Paralipomena*—a most precise history of all animals, much desired by scholars everywhere. I offer this work to your Name as if to a divine guardian, and rightly so. For in doing this, I am returning to you your own field—the one you entrusted to me for cultivation. I have cleared away the briars, opened up paths, and refined it through long nights of study. Or perhaps it is better to say I am reverently presenting you with a bouquet of flowers, gathered from this fertile and pleasant meadow, for your enjoyment.
Continue to support me with your patronage, for you once chose me for this task with such great enthusiasm.
Farewell, and may you live in happiness.
Bologna, December 1st, 1641.
