History of Monsters. 557
VIII. A three-footed chick.
Furthermore, Conrad Lycosthenes records that he saw a three-footed chick in Basel, in the suburb of the Cinari at a blacksmith’s house, in the year 1554. It was so remarkably swift that it could outrun all the others in its path.
We here present a rooster similar to the one mentioned above, also equipped with three feet, which is commonly known as a "Gallo Grotesco." This bird was black from its neck all the way to its vent but dappled with white spots; its entire back, extending to the rump, was a rust-red color.
Most of the wings were likewise rust-colored, though at their base and on the underside facing the belly, the long feathers were brownish and speckled with white. All the primary flight feathers were white, and the tail was a mix of green and black. A red patch surrounded the eyes, as the reader may observe in illustration VI, which also depicts "lesser foxtail grass."
