I. An ox born with five feet

In the territory of Bologna, near the villa known as Il Poggio—which lies four miles from our city—this ox was born in May of the year 1599. It possessed a fifth foot situated near its right side, as the accompanying illustration demonstrates. Although it was reported to have been born with six feet, it actually had no others beyond these five. The right eye was small and barely open, and the back of the head seemed to face in that same direction; consequently, the creature presented a mournful expression, with its right eye almost entirely closed. It is probable that the bones of the skull were not properly fused together. Near the haunches, there was a patch where the animal appeared to be completely devoid of hair. Its two "eggs," or testicles, were separated and located in different positions: one hung lower than the other, and one was positioned toward the right side, a considerable distance from its mate. The weight of the extra foot was two and a half ounces. One of these testicles weighed three ounces, while the other weighed an ounce and a half.
