History of Monsters 21

To this category, we might add other varieties of wild humans enumerated by Lycosthenes. These include those massive women discovered in the Eastern Ocean who possess unnaturally long necks, arms joined to their legs, shins like those of a donkey, and feet of a different shape. He describes the males as being similar to the females, though much smaller.

In this same context, we should also mention the women found in the deserts of Libya. Their breasts hang down as far as their knees, and while they lack the power of speech, they are known to shout out with great vehemence.

Furthermore, there are others living in the Libyan mountains who possess the legs of an ox, human faces and feet, the tail of a fox, the breasts of a goat, and a back hunched like that of a camel.

However, since Lycosthenes occasionally recorded "monsters of words" rather than of reality—as well as other fantastical fictions—we have chosen to set these accounts aside. Instead, we shall turn our attention to presenting an image of those shaggy men whose nature it is to walk by crawling. For this reason, they might be called *herpitanthropos* in Greek and "manugrades" in Latin. This is their likeness:
