# The History of Monsters. 143

Countless records exist concerning prodigious human apparitions. First, in the year 1553, according to Job Fincel, before the death of Maurice, the image of a tall man pouring blood from every part of his body appeared among the clouds in a certain village in Thuringia; the figure gradually dissolved into thin air. That same year in the Palatinate, two armored men were seen battling in the sky, only to vanish shortly thereafter, as recorded by Marcus Frysch in his *Meteorologica*.

Likewise, on October 6, 1556, in the Hungarian city of Babarsha, a duel between two young boys was witnessed in the heavens. The one clad in Turkish armor was seen to fall, riddled with many wounds. Indeed, at that same time and place, a rainbow appeared in all its various colors, flanked on either side by a parhelion, or double sun. We have provided an illustration of this entire spectacle in the preceding figure.
